Who is Panezio
Panezio was one of the greatest horses in the history of the Palio di Siena together, and with Folco was the most victorious Barbero in the history of our city.
Panezio was born in 1968 he ran 20 Palii winning 8 (July 2, 1973 Lupa, August 16, 1973 Eagle, August 16, 1974 Selva, August 16, 1975 Snail, August 16, 1976 Owl, September 7, 1980 Selva, August 16, 1982 Snail and August 16, 1983 Giraffe).
The debut of Panezio took place in July 1972. The last Palio in 1984.
Nicknamed the “Bassotto” (Daschund) he became the strongest ever; the people of Siena used to say that he was a true Contradaiolo and he only lacked the word. Before entering the Piazza del Campo he always took a look around to see how the situation was, how many people there were and who was chanting for him.
Today he rests near Siena under the headstone dedicated to him by his great trainer Leonardo Viti, known as Canapino.
