Who is Folco
Folco was one of the most victorious horses in the history of the Palio di Siena, the most successful in the twentieth century. Born in 1926, he raced 20 times in Piazza, winning eight times (July 2, 1933 and August 16, 1933 Tartuca, July 2, 1937 Lupa, August 16, 1937 Civetta, July 2, 1938 Lupa, July 2, 1939 Aquila August 16, 1945 Civetta mounted by Primo Arzilli called Biondo, August 20, 1945 Palio of Peace dedicated to the end of the Second World War).
He is also the horse with the longest career in the history of the Palio: he made his debut on July 2 1933, and ended his career on July 2 1947.
In July 1933 a Maremman horse arrived in the square, chestnut with the star on his forehead, he was called Folco and was assigned, between the general indifference, to the Tartuca who entrusted him to the energetic hands of Ganascia who won.
The following August, for the first time, Folco and Ruello who were brothers were against each other, beginning a dualism that remains legendary: the fate assigned Folco to Tartuca and Ruello to Lupa.
The race ended in an intense duel between the two brothers with Folco who won what will remain for a long time the only “cappotto” of the century. The legendary Folco died near Monsindoli, after a few years of deserved retirement, idolized by the entire contrada’s community.
