Who is Berio
Berio is a half-breed horse, among the most successful in the recent history of the Palio di Siena.
Horse with a dark coat born in February 1997; he ran 6 Palii and won 4 (16 August 2002 Tartuca, 16 August 2003 Bruco 2 July 2005 Bruco, 16 August 2005 Torre).
Winner already on his debut in the square in August 2002, under the colors of Tartuca, Berio repeated himself after a year in August 2003, this time running for Bruco.
The golden year of Berio, however, was 2005: first he won the Palio of Provenzano with Bruco, then dominated the Assumption with Torre, thus creating a historic ‘cappotto’. Thanks to the victory of 2005, Berio and Trecciolino gave the Torre the victory at the Palio of Siena after 44 years.
In August 2008, before the selection, Berio had another “moment of glory”: the lap of honor mounted by the jockey Luigi Bruschelli, called “Trecciolino“.
Berio is still alive and has been bought by the City of Siena, he lives at the Equestrian Centre of “Il Caggio” and periodically has many visits by his admirers.
